Chapter 22

James watched as the three walked off before he made eye contact with Richie, “Aren’t you accompanying them on the tour?”

“Maybe tomorrow. Today I will stay around and attend to some work.”

“Why do people say that we Americans work all the time?”

Richie stood while he explained, “The program I lead is younger than your nephew, and I am the sole staff.” He stopped talking and watched as James struggled out of his chair.

They joined four other people in the elevator going up. On arrival, Richie asked, “My suite or yours?”

“I thought you said you have work to do. Do you need some noise from me?”

“The work involves emails. Perhaps we can discuss the details to see what tasks you can take up when you return to Merica.”

As Richie inserted the card to open his door, James excused himself. “Let me bring my laptop.”

Richie waited by the door until James returned. They entered his room and sat in the living room, each focused on his laptop.

Richie responded to two emails in less than ten minutes, after which he spent time staring at his computer while stealing glances at James, who was preoccupied by whatever he was reading.

“Any work tasks on your side, or do we watch TV?” Richie asked.

“Was your work that brief?”

“I have completed the urgent part, which was to answer questions from two companies, one in Kenya and the other in Mozambique. AMME is a membership entity. We analyze and provide our members with up-to-date information which they use to create tangible advantage in their business.”

“Where do you get the information from?”

“We monitor markets in Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. We analyze and make projections based on their areas of focus. Does that sound like something you might be interested in?”

James smoothed a hand over his clean-shaven head. “I am a little rusty having worked for a while in a field removed from my area of training.”

“Did the Americans not let you work at their stock exchange?”

“The closest I got was to work in the background, providing details to those on the floor. The job ended with the 2007/8 financial crash, thereafter I simply transitioned into whatever job was available.”

Richie noted James’ poker-face and decided not to pursue questions on the specific type of job he did.

“I just started as an employee of AMME recently, in August. I think we can learn and grow the program together,” he said, hoping that James had received his hidden invitation to work for AMME on a long-term basis.

“How did you manage to take leave from work after one month? Did Dad allow that?”

“I worked two jobs for a year, plus I only vacated my managerial position last month. And, since Sophia wants to go back to work in January, this seemed the best time to travel. We arrive home and move to our house the same week.”

James switched on the TV and found the weather channel. “Why move out of home?”

“I promised Sophia that we would move to our own house after the baby was born.
